Interactive Learning Facility, UWS
The interactive learning facility which has been created for University of Wales Swansea is unique in its own right, in the way that it is has been developed closely with student feedback. Such a system has been sort after by the 'School of Engineering' for several years. The system is an extra resource for the students allowing them flexibility and access to not only course examples, but to offer help and assistance automatically 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The system is entirely scripted in Active Server Pages and the back end is connected to a Microsoft Access Database. The database contains all content which is displayed in the questions along with typical errors and hints. This may be changed or altered at anytime giving versatility for changing or altering questions. Images and graphics are stored on the system in .GIF format are displayed on the page if are any uploaded to the server which relate to the question. An anti-cheat system has also be implemented which prevents users from selecting answers consecutively to find the solution. If users are having severe difficulties with a particular question then a partial solution will be displayed. The question types are categorised into several section each of which have their own ASP template. These templates are typically different due to the fact questions may have 1,2 or perhaps 4 parts. Currently the system is being operated on the Thermodynamics field, however future expansion to other modules are in consideration. The multiple choice facility makes this type of Interactive Learning System work well with subjects where examples have number value answers.
